The Tri-State Debate League

Where the region's best debaters compete.

The Tri-State Debate League is a community of committed educators curating high-quality middle and high school debate tournaments across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Premier venues, experienced and academically focused judges, and awards worth competing for, open to every school in the region, from storied programs to teams entering their first round.

What We Do

Beyond Competition

Institute-level instruction, at the tournament

Learn From the Best

TSDL tournaments feature instructional tutorials and lectures from some of the best collegiate debaters, instructors, and coaches in the country. These are the same educators who teach at expensive summer debate institutes. We bring their lessons to the tournament, at no added cost.

A Community of Coaches

The league fosters mutual support and professional development among coaches. League directors offer instructional training and seminars on tournament logistics, Tabroom management, and the full range of debate coaching competencies.

Why We Do It

The best of the activity, within reach of every school

TSDL is more than a bridge to the national circuit. We are building debate itself across the tri-state area.

Every Student Deserves the Real Thing

Students at Title I schools, public schools, underfunded programs, and schools with no debate team yet deserve more than access to the activity. They deserve the best version of it: premier venues, rigorous judging, and real instruction. TSDL holds every tournament to that standard for every entrant, regardless of what their school spends on debate.

A Region That Competes Together

The tri-state area holds some of the deepest debate talent, coaching, and resources in the country, often within a few subway stops of schools just starting out. When a first-year program and a nationally ranked one meet in the same round, both leave better. Our circuit exists to make that meeting happen, season after season.

The Flagship Event
